STRATEGY

LAURAS develops immunostimulatory therapies that stimulate and improve patient immune functions in infectious diseases and certain types of cancer, and may have the potential of:

  • assisting the immune system in driving out the HIV virus
  • lowering the incidence of opportunistic infections
  • providing adjuvant immunostimulation to present antiretroviral treatment and therapeutic vaccination
  • benefiting patients both on and off current treatment regiments
  • postponing initiation of HAART
  • reducing current cost of treatment
  • enhancing anti-tumor immune activity in patients with cancer
PRESENT HIV THERAPY DOES NOT OFFER CURE FOR THE DISEASE
NEW DRUGS THAT STIMULATE THE FUNCTION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM ARE NEEDED

At present no immunostimulatory therapies have been registered. Such therapy may allow treatment of larger numbers of patients in countries that can not afford the present therapies and that do not have the infrastructure to deal with the present needs for follow-up. Furthmore, the incidence of particular cancers is increased in immune compromised patients.
