GLOBAL CHALLENGE

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) causes a chronic infection leading to severe dysfunction of the immune system with markedly increased incidence of a large number of infections and certain forms of malignancies, and ultimately death.

Estimates by the World Health Organization indicate that the total number of HIV positive patients by the end of 2006 was approximately 40 million. See Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.

PRESENT HIV THERAPY DOES NOT OFFER CURE FOR THE DISEASE
NEW DRUGS THAT STIMULATE THE FUNCTION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM ARE NEEDED
